Gum disease



PERIODONTAL DISEASE


Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.

Periodontal disease may be simple gum inflammation or serious disease that results in interdental bone loss.




Types:

1) Gingivitis:
                      Early stage of periodontal disease.
                      Reddish, swollen and bleeding gums.
                      Reversible through good oral hygiene and preventive care.

GINGIVITIS

2) Periodontitis:
                          Advanced stage of periodontal disease.
                          Irreversible destruction of tissues and bone that support the teeth.
                          Needs surgical care.

PERIODONTITIS

Prevention:

  • Practice good oral hygiene.
  • Brush twice daily.
  • Floss once daily.
  • Limit snacks between meals.
  • Regular dental visit  6 months once.
  • Stop the use of toothpicks, safety pins.
  • Wash your mouth after every meal.














Treatment:
  • Oral prophylaxis - Scaling and root planing.
  • Medication - chlorhexidine mouthwash, tetracycline fibres placement.
  • Surgical care and bone graft placement.
  • Laser treatment.
