Discolored teeth - causes and management.


TOOTH  DISCOLORATION

Tooth discoloration is any change in the color or translucency of a tooth due to any cause.

Tooth discoloration 2 types:
                                             Extrinsic discoloration,
                                             Intrinsic discoloration.

Extrinsic discoloration:  Stains seen on outer layer of tooth surface.
          Causes - foods and beverages,
                         tea, coffee,
                         smoking,
                         tobacco,
                         plaque & calculus accumulation,
                         mouthwashes.

Intrinsic discoloration:  Inner structures of the tooth darkens.
         Causes - high fluoride level in drinking water,

                        systemic diseases like erythroblastosis foetalis, amelogenesis imperfecta.

How to overcome the dental phobia?


DENTAL PHOBIA

A dental phobia is a fear of a dentist and to dental procedures.



For many people this phobia keep them away from getting the dental help they need by the dentists, because of this negligence due to fear, the untreated tooth and gum disease will progress to tooth decay and gum diseases and any other systemic illness.

Dental phobia can be caused by
  • Hereditary.
  • Observation of other people attending for complex dental treatments.
  • Previous bad experience with dental treatment.
  • Fear of pain and injections.
Tips to overcome dental phobia:
  • IMAGINATION -  Try distracting yourself. Especially think anything that will help you relax.
  • COMMUNICATION - If you are afraid of the dentist, let your dentist know about your fears and anxiety.
  • EDUCATION - Sometimes fear of unknown can be a cause to a fear of dentist. Speak with your dentist about what to expect and what is going to be done on your dental visit.
  • RELAXATION - Relaxation exercise include controlled breathing. This will help relax your muscles and slow your heartbeat.
  • DISTRACTION - Distraction technique include listening to music, fiddling with a stress ball, counting to yourself.
  • CONSCIOUS SEDATION - Sedatives helps the patient to relax and tolerate unpleasant procedures.
