CROSS-BITE

Crossbite is a dental condition that affects the way your teeth are aligned.

Crossbite means upper teeth fit behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed or at rest.

Crossbite can affect the front teeth and the back teeth. It can affect a single tooth or a group of teeth and one or both sides of the jaw.

ANTERIOR CROSSBITE -- affects the front teeth. It may involve a single tooth or all front teeth.

POSTERIOR CROSSBITE -- affects the back teeth. They can be unilateral (affecting the teeth on either left side or right side of the jaw) or bilateral (affecting both sides of the jaw).

BACK TEETH CROSSBITE

CAUSES:

  • Genetics.
  • Finger sucking in childhood.
  • Accident that causes jaw trauma.
  • Delayed loss of baby teeth.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
  • Cosmetic problem -- Altered shape or appearance of facial features, including jaw or facial asymmetry.
  • Pain in jaws.
  • Wear and tear of the teeth.
  • Frequent headaches.
  • Difficulty in speech.
  • Tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Trouble chewing or biting the foods.
In some cases, there won't be any symptoms also.

TREATMENT:

Depending on the type and severity of the crossbite, the treatment plan will be given by considering the several factors such as - age, overall health, personal preferences.

If a crossbite is identified during childhood, treatment can begin before age 10. When the jaw is still developing during childhood, palatal expanders can be used to widen the roof of the mouth and treat a crossbite. Headgear may also be used in the treatment.

Adults with mild case of crossbite can go for orthodontic treatment including braces and clear aligners.

Adults with a more severe crossbite, jaw surgery may be recommended.

CONCLUSION:

An untreated crossbite can cause issues with overall dental health and hygiene.

Teeth that aren’t aligned are more difficult to keep clean, which can increase your risk of dental decay and gum disease.

There are other chronic medical conditions associated with an uncorrected crossbite, including TMJ disorder and sleep apnea.

VENEERS Vs CROWNS

VENEERS vs CROWNS

A dental crown covers the whole surface area of the tooth, whereas the veneers only covers the front surface. Both improve the overall appearance of teeth and can be a truly life-changing cosmetic procedure.

DIFFERENCE?

A dental crown is 2mm thick and encases the whole tooth, working as a “cap".

A porcelain veneer covers the front surface of the tooth only and is usually wafer-thin like shell.

Both veneers and crowns are dental treatments used to restore the teeth that are either damaged, discolored, crooked, decayed, chipped, cracked or broken teeth.

Advantages of crowns:

  • A dental crown can alleviate the symptoms of inflammation, sensitivity on the       tooth and general toothache.
  •  Crowns last much longer than most other dental treatments.
  • Protects teeth with cracks or cavities.
  • Enhances the tooth’s appearance while also protecting the weak structure.

Disadvantages of Crowns:

  • Is more invasive to your tooth than a dental veneer.
  • Could have a visible metal base, depending on the design and materials used.

Advantages Of Veneers:

  • Aesthetically pleasing.
  • Veneers doesn't require a lot of trimming, so more of your natural healthy tooth structure remains.
  • Can replace the need for whitening or braces (in some cases).

Disadvantages Of Veneers:

  • Can be expensive.
  • Are usually non-reversible.

Which One Is Right For You?

Dental crowns are typically the best option if your tooth is very damaged, has a large filling, or has undergone a root canal, since the tooth enamel is more compromised and will need better protection.

Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are best for purely cosmetic purposes. If your tooth is mostly intact and only needs minor shape correction or an improved appearance, then your dentist will likely recommend veneers.

Your dentist will recommend one dental treatment option over the other based on your specific situation.
