THUMBSUCKING

THUMB SUCKING

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for children. Sucking on thumbs, fingers, or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world.
Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.

EFFECTS OF THUMB SUCKING:

  • Teeth being pushed around, which might cause an overbite or an underbite to form
  • A lisp being formed because constant thumb sucking can affect the jaw bone positioning
  • Germs from your thumb and surrounding areas affecting your body
  • The roof of the mouth becoming altered or more sensitive

steps to stop thumb sucking:

Habit-breaking Appliance
  • Praise – Tell your child how proud you are when you notice they’ve gone a while without sucking.
  • Find the Cause – If you notice your child sucks their thumb when they're anxious, talk to them and find the cause of the thumb sucking instead of criticizing the behavior.
  • Reward – Sometimes the promise of a small toy or other reward is enough to break the habit.
  • Wrap it Up – Sometimes a sock or bandage around the hand at night during sleep or quiet time can help stop the habit.
  • Bitter Medicines – There are bitter medicines available that you put on the thumbs and fingers that taste horrible to discourage the behavior.
  • Dental visit -Check up with dentist is more important. Your dentist can offer encouragement to your child and explain what could happen to their teeth if they do not stop sucking, the use of a habit breaking mouth appliance.

CONCLUSION:-

Children usually stop sucking between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. If you notice changes in your child’s primary teeth, or are concerned about your child’s thumbsucking consult your dentist.

DENTAL X-RAYS

                        DENTAL X-RAYS

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

Dental X-Rays are a safe and the most effective way to diagnose and detect tooth damage and disease that cannot otherwise be seen with the naked eye.
Today, dental X-ray equipment and procedures are designed to limit the body's exposure to radiation and every precaution is taken to ensure that radiation exposure is as low as possible, making the risk of potentially harmful effects very small. In fact, the amount of radiation received from a dental X-ray examination is extremely low compared to other naturally-occurring sources of radiation such as flying on an airplane.
The number and frequency of X-rays needed are determined by overall oral health, existing symptoms, risk for disease, and age. Typically children require dental X-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are still developing and their teeth are more commonly affected by tooth decay than adults.

IMPACT OF TOBACCO ON ORAL HEALTH

TOBACCO ON ORAL HEALTH

Tobacco has serious negative effects not only for your overall health, but specifically the soft and hard tissues of your mouth. Both smoking and chewing tobacco have serious risks, including oral cancer, gum disease, poor healing after surgery, receding gums, and tooth decay.

SMOKING :

Cigarettes contain over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer. As you inhale, the smoke lingers in your mouth before you exhale. Smoking directly affects your oral health because it, reduces blood flow to your gums, reduces the vitamin C levels needed to keep gums healthy, and raises the temperature in the mouth which causes damage to important cells.

SMOKELESS TOBACCO :

Smokeless tobacco is just as bad for you as smoking. In fact, chewing tobacco allows the harmful chemicals and substances to stay in your mouth longer and come into direct contact with your teeth and gums. This causes rapid tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. Smokeless tobacco users are up to 50 times more likely to develop oral cancer, especially in areas where chewing tobacco is held in your mouth.

EFFECTS :

CONCLUSION:

Brushing and flossing can help, but nothing can completely eradicate the negative impact that smoking and chewing has on breath. Smoking dries out the mouth. Without an adequate level of saliva in the mouth, bacteria does not get rinsed away naturally, thus causing bad breath and oftentimes tooth decay. So, "DON'T LET TOBACCO DESTROY YOU, START DESTROYING TOBACCO".

MOUTH WASHES

MOUTH WASHES

Mouthwash is a great way to freshen breath and keep gums healthy, but they should not be used on a regular basis, unless it is prescribed by a dentist.

PURPOSE OF MOUTHWASH :
  1. Ulcer
  2. Foul smell
  3. Gum problems
  4. Stained Teeth

TYPES:

  1. Alcoholic
  2. Non-alcoholic

CONSEQUENCES OF ALCOHOLIC MOUTH WASH:

  1. Loss of taste sensation
  2. Dry mouth
  3. Stains on the teeth
Based on the purpose, mouth washes are prescribed. So, mouthwashes should not be used without your dentist's advice. Mouth washes when used on a long term basis without dentist's advice may cause several complications.

BEST MOUTH WASH - WARM SALT WATER

    How to Use Mouthwash ?

    1. Start by pouring the right amount out of the bottle, we recommend that you use 15ml of oral rinse.
    2. Rinse vigorously for 30 seconds, making sure that the mouth wash comes into contact with all areas of your teeth.
    3. Gargle for 30-60 seconds, in order to ensure that your mouthwash can deal with bacteria at the back of the tongue.
    4. Spit out the mouth wash.
    5. To avoid food and water for 30 mins.

CONCLUSION

Mouthwash is a great tool to help you get better teeth, but using mouthwash alone does not replace the value and effectiveness of a full oral health routine. A proper oral health routine includes brushing your teeth for two minutes at a time twice per day and flossing once per day to clean the hard-to-reach areas of your teeth.
