2020 - Resolutions for a healthy mouth

NEW YEAR - NEW SMILE

The new year is the perfect time to design resolutions for establishing healthy oral habits.
Oral health is a major component of overall health.

Here are some resolutions for healthy mouth and beautiful smile:

  • See your dentist for every six months
Regular dental visits help to prevent any dental health problems before they cause discomfort or before they require more comprehensive or expensive treatment.

  • Take your infant or toddler to see a dentist
Your child's first dental visit should be as soon as child's first tooth erupts. Your dentist will show you how to lower the chances of your child getting cavities.

  • Brushing twice daily for two minutes
Tooth brush should be changed whenever the toothbrush bristles got flared or two months once. Brushing protects your teeth by removing plaque that builds up on your teeth everyday.

  • Floss daily once
Flossing can remove plaque in between the teeth, where tooth brush can't access and avoid cavities in between the teeth.

  • Eat healthy diet
Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. Limit the snacks in between the meals. Healthy and balanced diet will give good oral health along with overall health and freshens the breath.

  • Quit smoking and alcohol intake
Smoking increases the risk for both gum disease and oral cancer. Alcohol intake leads to dry mouth followed by gum disease and cavities.

For this new year, resolve to treat your oral health: improve your diet, quit smoking and improve your oral hygiene habits.
Wish you all have a healthy happy new year !!

Dental implants and dental bridge - better one ?

DENTAL IMPLANTS Vs DENTAL BRIDGE

In dental bridge, there is need to take support from the adjacent natural teeth.

Dental implants can be used to replace more than one missing teeth.
In dental bridge, dentist needs healthy adjacent teeth for support.

Dental implants preserve the bone quality and quantity.
In dental bridges, we can see the decreased bone quality and quantity in missing teeth region over the years.

Dental implants are esthetic, functional, comfortable in long term use also.
In dental bridges, gums and bone can recede around bridge, leaving a visible defect and leads to unattractive smile.

Secondary caries / Recurrent caries

SECONDARY CARIES

Secondary caries, otherwise known as recurrent caries (cavities) is tooth decay occurring underneath/surrounding existing dental restorations such as dental fillings, crowns or onlays.

CAUSES :-
These recurrent cavities can be a result of poor oral hygiene habits, or can be caused by a microscopic access or hole in the dental restoration, allowing acids and bacteria to creep in. And unfortunately, these microscopic pathways cannot be cleaned using standard oral hygiene practices because they are so tiny and inaccessible. The cariogenic bacteria in the saliva will grow when the environment of micro cracks is appropriate, thereby producing secondary caries.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS :

1.Blackish discolouration of tooth around the filling

              Amalgam(silver) filling                              Secondary caries

Composite (tooth coloured) filling                 Secondary caries

2.Sensitivity                                                                   3.Pain

4.Broken filling/tooth fragment                                5.Food lodgement

TREATMENT:

1.RE-RESTORATION (Re-filling):-

Once a secondary cavity has been detected via radiographic (X-ray) evidence, or with a dental explorer (probe), laser or visual examination, then it’s crucial to proceed with treatment before the problem progresses even further.

The secondary tooth decay must be removed and the current failed filling or restoration must be replaced.

2.ROOT CANAL TREATMENT :-

Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent re-infection of the tooth and save the natural tooth. When one undergoes a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed.

PREVENTION:-

1.Simply brushing twice daily (for two full minutes), as well as flossing once daily will help to keep your smile sufficiently clean, reducing your risk of secondary (and regular) tooth decay.

2. Regular check up with your dentist twice a year, or when required.

3.This visit will involve a thorough cleaning (scaling) from the hygienist to remove plaque from the surfaces of the teeth, as well as a check-up/examination by the dentist to ensure that your current filling(s)/restorations and everything else are in great shape.

INVISALIGN Vs BRACES

A beautiful smile comes with a straight and well aligned teeth. Orthodontists will help you achieve a beautiful smile with braces treatment or invisalign

Now a days, with the increased aesthetic demands of the population, clear aligners are very helpful.

Invisalign:

  • Nearly invisible clear plastic aligners.
  • As it is removable, there is no food restrictions.
  • Easy to maintain oral hygiene.
  • Customized and comfortable.
  • To be worn a minimum of 20 to 22 hours daily for them to be effective.
  • We can see the virtual results before the treatment starts.
Braces:
  • Both metal and ceramic braces are visible and fixed.
  • Has food restrictions, as hard foods may break the brackets.
  • Requires more effort to ensure good oral hygiene.
