BRUXISM - TEETH GRINDING

BRUXISM

Bruxism  also known as tooth grinding, is the medical term for clenching or grinding teeth. Few people unconsciously grind their teeth and/or clench their jaw, either while awake or during sleep. If not resolved, this activity can lead to weakened or cracked teeth, receeding gums, damaged jaw joint, headaches, disrupted sleep and more. Occasional bruxism may not be harmful but when it occurs regularly, it may be associated with moderate to severe dental damage, facial pain, and disturbed sleep.

SYMPTOMS :
  • dull headaches
  • jaw soreness
  • teeth that are painful or loose
  • fractured teeth
Teeth grinding is also common in children. However, because their teeth and jaws change and grow so quickly it is not usually a damaging habit that requires treatment and most outgrow it by adolescence.   Although in adults teeth grinding is often the result of stress, the same is not always true with children. Other possible causes of teeth grinding in children include:
  • Irritation in the mouth
  • allergies
  • misaligned teeth
TREATMENT :

Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth during sleep. In some
cases, your dentist or physician may recommend taking a muscle relaxant medicine before bedtime.
If stress is the cause you need to find a way to relax. Meditation, counseling and exercise can all help stress and anxiety.

TEETH EROSIN - Stomach Upset and Your Teeth

Erosion: Stomach Upset and Your Teeth

Frequent stomach upset can cause a gradual wearing away of the protective enamel on your teeth, a process known as tooth erosion. This can affect the appearance of your teeth and open the door for harmful bacteria that cause cavities.

How Do Stomach Problems Affect My Teeth?

Your stomach produces natural acids that help your body digest food. Sometimes, these acids travel up the throat and into the mouth, especially after a large meal. Ordinarily, our saliva rebalances the acid levels in our mouth and everything’s fine.
But for those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, also known as acid reflux or GERD, gastric acids reach the mouth throughout the day. This process is especially damaging when you’re asleep, since you are swallowing less often and your mouth is producing less saliva.
Another concern is the dry mouth caused by many acid reflux medicines. Saliva not only helps neutralize the acids caused by acid reflux, but also helps to wash away food particles and reduce bacteria that attack tooth enamel. This is why lower saliva production may increase your risk for cavities.

What Does Reflux-Related Erosion Do to My Teeth?

TEETH EROSION

Acid reflux can wear away the enamel on the inside surfaces of your teeth, as well as the chewing surfaces. Your dentist may notice this during an examination.
Unfortunately, tooth erosion is permanent. If your enamel has started to wear away, you may:
  • Feel pain or sensitivity when consuming hot, cold or sweet drinks
  • Yellowish discoloration of the teeth
  • Develop an abscess, in extreme cases
  • Experience tooth loss, also in extreme cases

How to Protect Your Teeth – And Get Relief

  • Chewing sugar-free gum can encourage saliva production, which helps neutralize and wash away the acids in your mouth.
  • Prescription or over-the-counter fluoride and desensitizing toothpastes may help strengthen tooth enamel.
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking and refraining may reduce the frequency of acid reflux episodes.
  • If heartburn, acid reflux or other stomach problems are part of your daily life, work with your physician on a care plan to treat the underlying causes of your stomach troubles.
  • If you suffer from acid reflux, see your dentist regularly so they can make sure your teeth stay healthy, recommend ways to prevent tooth enamel erosion and suggest ways to get relief if you are also suffering from dry mouth.

Conclusion

Once erosion occurs, your treatment you may need fillings, crowns, a root canal or even tooth removal. Veneers may be an option to restore the look of your smile.

Treatment to deep cavities in milk teeth.

PULPECTOMY

A pulpectomy is a complete removal of pulp from the crown and roots. The tooth is then filled with a filling material that can be resorbed by the body. It's usually performed on baby teeth or milk teeth.

Root canal treatment in baby teeth is called as a ''pulpectomy."

There are several causes of pulpal infections that may lead to pulpectomy are --

1) Deeply decayed teeth.
2) Extensive dental fillings.
3) Trauma to the teeth.

Pulpectomy procedure:

1) Administering local anaesthesia.
2) Drilling a hole and removing the infected pulp and cleaning the canal and filling the root canal followed by inserting the stainless steel crown.
3) Prescribing the antibiotics.

Pulpectomy is commonly performed on milk teeth of a child to reduce the risk of early loss of primary teeth, which can cause the alignment problems in permanent dentition.

THUMBSUCKING

THUMB SUCKING

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for children. Sucking on thumbs, fingers, or other objects may make babies feel secure and happy and help them learn about their world.
Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.

EFFECTS OF THUMB SUCKING:

  • Teeth being pushed around, which might cause an overbite or an underbite to form
  • A lisp being formed because constant thumb sucking can affect the jaw bone positioning
  • Germs from your thumb and surrounding areas affecting your body
  • The roof of the mouth becoming altered or more sensitive

steps to stop thumb sucking:

Habit-breaking Appliance
  • Praise – Tell your child how proud you are when you notice they’ve gone a while without sucking.
  • Find the Cause – If you notice your child sucks their thumb when they're anxious, talk to them and find the cause of the thumb sucking instead of criticizing the behavior.
  • Reward – Sometimes the promise of a small toy or other reward is enough to break the habit.
  • Wrap it Up – Sometimes a sock or bandage around the hand at night during sleep or quiet time can help stop the habit.
  • Bitter Medicines – There are bitter medicines available that you put on the thumbs and fingers that taste horrible to discourage the behavior.
  • Dental visit -Check up with dentist is more important. Your dentist can offer encouragement to your child and explain what could happen to their teeth if they do not stop sucking, the use of a habit breaking mouth appliance.

CONCLUSION:-

Children usually stop sucking between the ages of two and four years old, or by the time the permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. If you notice changes in your child’s primary teeth, or are concerned about your child’s thumbsucking consult your dentist.
