Dental visits or dental checkups - oral health maintanance

DENTAL CHECK UP - IMPORTANCE

Irregular or delayed dental check ups will cause huge number of problems to our oral health.
Many of the people ignore the oral health when compared to the overall health.
People will allow the problems to develop before they actually visit the dentist.

Some common issues that left unchecked:
  • Bleeding gums - gum bleeding and inflamed gums followed by periodontal pocket formation results in bone loss & causing the tooth loss.
Visiting the dentist regularly can ensure your gum health properly maintained and early treatments prevents further serious conditions.
    GINGIVITIS

    PERIODONTITIS
  • Tooth sensitivity - when there is initial decay, you may experience tooth sensitivity & in this stage we can save the tooth with filling, if delayed the decay may go to deeper layers and cause tooth pain, by this time treatment option will change.

    COMPOSITE FILLING FOR INITIAL DECAY

    COMPOSITE FILLING FOR DECAYED TOOTH

  • Tooth pain - Tooth pain comes mostly because of deep decay cases, sometimes tooth pain may be overlooked with help of over-the-counter medication, at that time pain may subside but the decay may go extensive.
In early intervention tooth can be saved by root canal treatment and in delayed cases tooth may needs to be removed and go for replacement.

For adults and children, six months once dental visit is compulsory. If any medical health condition is there three months once dental visit is preferable.

CONCLUSION:

Because of regular dental visits so many problems we can prevent with early intervention.
Early treatments are cost effective when compared to tooth replacements, crowns and gum therapy.

Visiting the dentist should be a regular part of our schedule.

Receding gums - gum disease

GUM RECESSION

Gums or gingiva is the pink tissue that covers the teeth and attach firmly to the jaw bone.
Healthy gums protect the roots of the teeth.

HEALTHY GUMS

Gum recession - Gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away, or pulls back, exposing the tooth's root.

GUM RECESSION IN UPPER TEETH
GUM RECESSION IN LOWER TEETH

Causes:
PERIODONTITIS

Ageing, Smoking, Diabetes are risk factors for gum recession.

Symptoms:
GUM RECESSION ALONG WITH ATTACHMENT LOSS

Treatment:

Mild recession can be treated by a professional deep cleaning in affected area.

In severe cases, excess bone loss and deep pockets, gum surgery or LANAP (Laser Assissted New Attachment Procedure) may be required.

Conclusion:

Most people aren't aware that they have receding gums as it occurs gradually. If left untreated the surrounding tissue and bone may damage results in tooth loss. So, it is advisable to catch the early signs of gum disease and prevent further damage.

How to avoid Malalignment?

SPACE MAINTAINERS

Primary (baby) teeth are important for your child’s dental health. They help them to eat and speak and serve as space holders in your child’s mouth to ensure that permanent teeth grow in straight. Baby teeth are also important for the jawbone and mouth muscles to develop normally.
If a child’s baby tooth comes out too soon due to accident or tooth decay, problems may occur. The neighboring teeth may crowd out the space where the permanent tooth should come in or cause the tooth to come in crooked. A space maintainer may be recommended by your pediatric dentist to reduce the risk of these problems.

Space maintainer is an appliance that is custom-made by a dentist or orthodontist in acrylic or metal material. It can be either removable or cemented in a child's mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space  open the empty space left by the lost teeth, preventing movement until the permanent tooth takes its natural position in the jaw. It’s more affordable and easier on your child to keep teeth in normal positions with a space maintainer than to move them back in place with orthodontic treatment.

EFFECTS OF EARLY EXFOLIATION(shedding) OF PRIMARY TEETH:

  • Delayed eruption of permanent tooth

  • Aesthetic and emotional disturbances

  • Teeth present adjacent to the missing tooth start moving towards the empty space. Therefore the space gets closed and the permanent tooth gets locked in the bone.

  • Tooth opposing the missing tooth supraerupts (moves downwards/upwards)

  • Speech defects

  • Improper chewing

  • Crowding due to less space

  • Poor nutrition and feeding due to improper chewing

  • Abnormal muscle activity and habits like tongue thrusting

CONCLUSION

If there is space present due to premature exfoliation of tooth then consult your dentist immediately. He will fabricate an appliance that maintain the space until successor tooth erupts. The procedure is painless and very effective for the future of your child.

DENTAL ABSCESS

Types of dental abscess :
PERIAPICAL ABSCESS:

  • Swelling in your gums or cheek.
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Difficulty in chewing and biting.

PERIODONTAL ABSCESS:

Periodontal abscess is a collection of pus around the tooth root (sides of tooth root).
It occurs as a result of periodontal pockets, along with dental plaque, calculus and bacteria.
Oral mucosa over abscess appears as red, swollen and painful to touch.

Signs and symptoms:
  • Bad breath.
  • Severe pain.
  • Pus discharge through the periodontal pocket.
Treatment - Pus drainage, scaling, curettage and LANAP( Laser Assissted New Attachment Procedure). In some cases we may need to do Root canal treatment to the involved tooth. In severe cases we may need to remove the tooth and go for replacement.

LANAP TREATMENT

Broken tooth treatment

TREATMENT FOR TOOTH FRACTURE

                                                                     Normal tooth

I . ENAMEL & DENTIN FRACTURE

   TREATMENT :

                                1.COMPOSITE RESTORATION (filling)

If the tooth has broken till the enamel or dentin level, the dentist will often fix the broken tooth with a filling. This will protect and restore the strength of the tooth.
For areas of your mouth that are visible when you smile, it may be preferable to bond the tooth. The dentist uses a special resin that adheres to the broken tooth. It is shaped and matched to the color of your other teeth. An ultraviolet light is used to set the resin and harden it. The end result is a repaired tooth that looks natural and healthy.

                                                                  2.VENEERS

When there are cosmetic concerns, the best solution is a porcelain veneer. Especially if the front tooth was broken, a veneer can repair the tooth while ensuring that your smile looks great. Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are shaped and colored to match your other teeth perfectly. They can be fixed to the front of the broken tooth once it has been properly treated.

If the tooth has broken down to the pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels lie, root canal therapy is recommended to prevent infection and the need for extraction. A broken tooth may require a crown after root canal therapy in order to keep it protected for long-term use.

   STEPS IN RCT :

  RADIOGRAPHS (X-RAYs):

PRE-OPERATIVE:

POST-OPERATIVE :

III. ROOT FRACTURE

TREATMENT :
