CROSS-BITE

Crossbite is a dental condition that affects the way your teeth are aligned.

Crossbite means upper teeth fit behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed or at rest.

Crossbite can affect the front teeth and the back teeth. It can affect a single tooth or a group of teeth and one or both sides of the jaw.

ANTERIOR CROSSBITE -- affects the front teeth. It may involve a single tooth or all front teeth.

CAUSES:

  • Genetics.
  • Finger sucking in childhood.
  • Accident that causes jaw trauma.
  • Delayed loss of baby teeth.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
  • Cosmetic problem -- Altered shape or appearance of facial features, including jaw or facial asymmetry.
  • Pain in jaws.
  • Wear and tear of the teeth.
  • Frequent headaches.
  • Difficulty in speech.
  • Tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Trouble chewing or biting the foods.
In some cases, there won't be any symptoms also.

TREATMENT:

Depending on the type and severity of the crossbite, the treatment plan will be given by considering the several factors such as - age, overall health, personal preferences.

If a crossbite is identified during childhood, treatment can begin before age 10. When the jaw is still developing during childhood, palatal expanders can be used to widen the roof of the mouth and treat a crossbite. Headgear may also be used in the treatment.

Adults with mild case of crossbite can go for orthodontic treatment including braces and clear aligners.

Adults with a more severe crossbite, jaw surgery may be recommended.

CONCLUSION:

An untreated crossbite can cause issues with overall dental health and hygiene.

Teeth that aren’t aligned are more difficult to keep clean, which can increase your risk of dental decay and gum disease.

There are other chronic medical conditions associated with an uncorrected crossbite, including TMJ disorder and sleep apnea.
