How to prevent cavities in milk teeth.

PREVENTION OF TEETH CAVITIES IN PRIMARY TEETH

• Take good care of your own oral health even before your baby is born. It is important to see a dentist for oral care while you are pregnant.

• Whether you choose to breast feed or bottle-feed, it is important to take good care of your baby's teeth.

           Birth to 12 months: Keep your baby's mouth clean by gently wiping the gums with a clean cloth. Once you see the first tooth, gently brush using a soft baby toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste.

RICE GRAIN SIZE - UNDER 3 YRS AGE

           12 to 36 months: Brush your child's teeth 2 times per day for 2 minutes in morning and night before going to bed. Use a pea sized toothpaste from 3 to 5 years of age.

PEA SIZE - 3-5 YRS AGE

• Never put your child to bed with a milk bottle - this exposes your child's teeth to sugars.

• Do not use a bottle or sipper as a pacifier for longer periods, if needed to use fill it with water only.
• Check to see if your water is flouridated. If your tap water does not have enough fluoride, your child's dentist may prescribe a fluoride supplement and also apply fluoride varnish to your child's teeth to protect them from decay.
• Limit the amount of sweet or sticky foods your child eats, such as candies, gummies, cookies.

• Limit the snacks in between the meals.
• Make an appointment with the dentist when the first tooth erupts for your child.

Tooth decay can be prevented. Talk with your dentist if you see any signs of decay in your child's teeth. With the right care, your child can grow up to have healthy teeth for a lifetime of smiles.

Eruption of baby teeth

TEETHING

Teething is the process by which a baby's teeth erupt, or break through the gums.

Teething generally occurs between 6 to 30 months of age.

SYMPTOMS OF TEETHING:

• Irritability.
• Difficulty in sleeping.
• Loss of appetite.
• Drooling more than usual.
• Easily gets upset.
• Keeping hands in the mouth.

Teething is not associated with 

                                                     fever,

                                                     diarrhoea, 

                                                     rashes over the body.

SOOTHING FOR TEETHING:

Massage the baby's gums with clean finger or back of a small cold spoon or a moist guaze pad.

IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH

Impacted wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that don't have enough space to emerge or develop normally.

Impacted wisdom teeth may cause no apparent or immediate problems. But because they're hard to clean, they may be more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease than other teeth are. Impacted wisdom teeth that cause pain or other dental complications are usually removed.

Wisdom teeth usually emerge sometime between the ages of 17 and 25.

Symptoms:

Impacted wisdom teeth don't always cause symptoms. However, when an impacted wisdom tooth becomes infected, damages other teeth or causes other dental problems, you may experience some of these signs or symptoms:

·         Red or swollen gums

·         Tender or bleeding gums

·         Jaw pain

·         Swelling around the jaw

·         Bad breath

·         An unpleasant taste in your mouth

·         Difficulty opening your mouth

Complications:

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause several problems in the mouth:

Damage to other teeth. If the wisdom tooth pushes against the second molar, it may damage the second molar or increase the risk of infection in that area. This pressure can also cause problems with crowding of the other teeth or require orthodontic treatment to straighten other teeth.

Impacted wisdom teeth gives pressure on the adjacent tooth results in resorption of the adjacent tooth root.

Decay. Partially impacted wisdom teeth appear to be at higher risk of tooth decay (caries) than other teeth. This probably occurs because wisdom teeth are harder to clean and because food and bacteria get easily trapped between the gum and a partially erupted tooth. Because of impacted tooth, adjacent tooth may get decayed in most cases.

Gum disease. The difficulty cleaning impacted, partially erupted wisdom teeth increases the risk of developing a painful, inflammatory gum condition called pericoronitis in that area.

Cysts. The wisdom tooth develops in a sac within the jawbone. The sac can fill with fluid, forming a cyst that can damage the jawbone, teeth and nerves. Rarely, a tumor — usually noncancerous (benign) — develops. This complication may require removal of tissue and bone.

Prevention:

Regular six-month dental appointments for cleaning and checkups enables your dentist to monitor the growth and emergence of your wisdom teeth. Regularly updated dental X-rays may indicate impacted wisdom teeth before any symptoms develop.
