Problems related to wisdom teeth

WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars and appears in the mouth in early twenties.
Wisdom teeth gets impacted when there is no enough space in the arch.

Problems caused by wisdom teeth are :

Pericoronitis - Inflammation of soft tissues surrounding the crown of partially erupted tooth. There will be food impaction under the inflamed soft tissue, causes a bad breath.

Improper positioning of wisdom teeth results in food lodgement between the teeth & then decay and infection, pain to both wisdom tooth and adjacent tooth.

Wisdom teeth, while trying to erupt it will give pressure on adjacent teeth results in crowded anterior teeth.

In long term impacted cases, there is a chance a cyst may develop around the impacted wisdom teeth.

Erupting wisdom teeth may cause radiating pain to the ear and head.
Mouth opening restriction will be there in some cases.

Swelling related to the teeth.

DENTAL ABSCESS

Dental abscess - Collection of pus in gums and around the teeth.

DENTAL ABSCESS

Types of dental abscess :

Periapical abscess.
Periodontal abscess.

PERIAPICAL ABSCESS:

Periapical abscess is a collection of pus at the root apex of a tooth.

Usually occurs as a result of untreated dental cavity leading to pulpal infection, an injury to the tooth.

Signs and symptoms:

Severe toothache that may radiate to other teeth, neck, ear.
Swelling in your gums or cheek.
Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
Difficulty in chewing and biting.
Swollen lymph nodes under your jaw.

Treatment - Root canal treatment and antibiotic therapy. In severe cases, we may need to remove the tooth and go for replacement.

PERIODONTAL ABSCESS:

Periodontal abscess is a collection of pus around the tooth root (sides of tooth root).
It occurs as a result of periodontal pockets, along with dental plaque, calculus and bacteria.
Oral mucosa over abscess appears as red, swollen and painful to touch.

Signs and symptoms:

Bad breath.
Severe pain.
Pus discharge through the periodontal pocket.

Treatment - Pus drainage, scaling, curettage and LANAP( Laser Assissted New Attachment Procedure). In some cases we may need to do Root canal treatment to the involved tooth. In severe cases we may need to remove the tooth and go for replacement.
