How to avoid Malalignment?

SPACE MAINTAINERS

Primary (baby) teeth are important for your child’s dental health. They help them to eat and speak and serve as space holders in your child’s mouth to ensure that permanent teeth grow in straight. Baby teeth are also important for the jawbone and mouth muscles to develop normally.
If a child’s baby tooth comes out too soon due to accident or tooth decay, problems may occur. The neighboring teeth may crowd out the space where the permanent tooth should come in or cause the tooth to come in crooked. A space maintainer may be recommended by your pediatric dentist to reduce the risk of these problems.

Space maintainer is an appliance that is custom-made by a dentist or orthodontist in acrylic or metal material. It can be either removable or cemented in a child's mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space  open the empty space left by the lost teeth, preventing movement until the permanent tooth takes its natural position in the jaw. It’s more affordable and easier on your child to keep teeth in normal positions with a space maintainer than to move them back in place with orthodontic treatment.

EFFECTS OF EARLY EXFOLIATION(shedding) OF PRIMARY TEETH:

  • Delayed eruption of permanent tooth

  • Aesthetic and emotional disturbances

  • Teeth present adjacent to the missing tooth start moving towards the empty space. Therefore the space gets closed and the permanent tooth gets locked in the bone.

  • Tooth opposing the missing tooth supraerupts (moves downwards/upwards)

  • Speech defects

  • Improper chewing

  • Crowding due to less space

  • Poor nutrition and feeding due to improper chewing

  • Abnormal muscle activity and habits like tongue thrusting

CONCLUSION

If there is space present due to premature exfoliation of tooth then consult your dentist immediately. He will fabricate an appliance that maintain the space until successor tooth erupts. The procedure is painless and very effective for the future of your child.

A pulpectomy is a common procedure in which a dentist removes all of the pulp from a tooth’s pulp chamber, removing it from the crown and roots. This procedure is commonly performed on the primary teeth or milk tooth of a child to reduce the risk of early primary tooth loss, which can cause bite and alignment problems.
Causes of pulpal infection
There are several causes for pulp infections, including:
• deep decay of the tooth
• a chipped tooth
• large dental fillings
• trauma to the face
How to find out that the teeth needs pulpectomy?
• The tooth or gum line may develop an abscess
• Infections can also be seen with an X-ray of the involved tooth.
Infections are easily identified, as damage to the pulp becomes visible when an abscess, a pocket of pus, forms at the tip of the tooth root. An X-ray may be needed to view the infection.
Treatment
Dentists take these steps with patients undergoing a pulpectomy.
1. Apply a local anesthetic—Dentists try to minimize the discomfort patients feel during a pulpectomy by administering a local anesthesia, though this does not remove pain or discomfort entirely.
2.
Drill a hole—The dentist then accesses the pulp by drilling a hole into the tooth.
3.
Remove the pulp and fill the tooth—After the pulp is removed, the tooth is filled with an inert substance and, lastly, filled with a cap or crown.
4.
Prescribe antibiotics—To reduce the risk of infection, prophylactic antibiotics are prescribed.
Alternative Treatment
Tooth extraction is an alternative to a pulpectomy but is usually avoided because this can cause other teeth to shift, eventually resulting in crowding in the mouths of children who still have teeth growing. In addition, tooth extraction can make it difficult for children to eat, especially if more than one tooth is removed at a time.

Find a dentist in your area if you suspect your child have a tooth infection and need a pulpectomy

How to Prevent Tooth Decay in Your Baby:
Image result for milk tooth decay

Baby teeth are important. If baby teeth are lost too early, the teeth that are left may move and not leave any space for adult teeth to come in. Also, if tooth decay is not prevented, it may cause pain, may spread to other tooth, may affect permanent tooth bud and lead to life-threatening infections.
Healthy dental habits should begin early because tooth decay can develop as soon as the first tooth comes in.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay in Babies
Take the following steps to prevent tooth decay:
  • Take good care of your own oral health even before your baby is born. It is important  to see a dentist for oral care while you are pregnant.
  • Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, it is important to take good care of your baby's teeth.
    • Birth to 12 months: Keep your baby's mouth clean by gently wiping the gums with a clean baby washcloth. Once you see the first teeth, gently brush using a soft baby toothbrush.
    • 12 to 36 months: Brush your child's teeth 2 times per day for 2 minutes. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste until your child's third birthday. The best times to brush are after breakfast and before bed.
  • Never put your child to bed with a bottle or food. This not only exposes your child's teeth to sugars but can also put your child at risk for ear infections and choking.
  • Do not use a bottle or sippy cup as a pacifier. If your child wants to have the bottle or sippy cup in between meals, fill it with only water.
  • Check to see if your water is fluoridated. Your child will benefit from drinking water with fluoride in it.If your  tap water does not have enough fluoride, your child's doctor or dentist may prescribe a fluoride supplement. He or she may also apply fluoride varnish to your child's teeth to protect them from decay.
  • Teach your child to drink from a regular cup as soon as possible, preferably by 12 to 15 months of age. Drinking from a cup is less likely to cause liquid to collect around the teeth. Also, a cup cannot be taken to bed.
  • If your child must have a bottle or sippy cup for long periods, fill it with water only.
  • Limit the amount of sweet or sticky foods your child eats, such as candy, gummies, cookies, Fruit Roll-Ups, or cookies. Sugar is in foods like crackers and chips too. These foods are especially bad if your child snacks on them a lot. They should be eaten only at mealtime.
  • Make an appointment to have your child see the dentist before the age of 1. If you have concerns, the dentist can see your child sooner.
Remember

Tooth decay can be prevented. Talk with your child's dentist if you see any sign of decay in your child's teeth or if you have questions about your child's teeth. With the right care, your child can grow up to have healthy teeth for a lifetime of smiles.
