GUM RECESSION

Gums or gingiva is the pink tissue that covers the teeth and attach firmly to the jaw bone.
Healthy gums protect the roots of the teeth.

Gum recession - Gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away, or pulls back, exposing the tooth's root.

Causes:

• Poor oral hygiene.
• Physical wear due to aggressive tooth brushing.
• Malalignment.
• Periodontitis.
• Hormonal changes.
• Grinding or clenching the teeth.

PERIODONTITIS

Ageing, Smoking, Diabetes are risk factors for gum recession.

Symptoms:

• Exposed roots results in sensitivity.
• Gaps forms in between the teeth results in food lodgment followed by root caries.

• Periodontal pockets forms followed by attachment loss results in loose teeth.

Treatment:

Mild recession can be treated by a professional deep cleaning in affected area.

In severe cases, excess bone loss and deep pockets, gum surgery or LANAP (Laser Assissted New Attachment Procedure) may be required.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.

Periodontal disease may be simple gum inflammation or serious disease that results in interdental bone loss.

Types:

1) Gingivitis:
                      Early stage of periodontal disease.
                      Reddish, swollen and bleeding gums.
                      Reversible through good oral hygiene and preventive care.

GINGIVITIS

2) Periodontitis:
                          Advanced stage of periodontal disease.
                          Irreversible destruction of tissues and bone that support the teeth.
                          Needs surgical care.

• Bad breath.

• Brush twice daily.
• Floss once daily.
• Limit snacks between meals.
