DENTAL TRAUMA
Dental trauma refers to trauma(injury) to the teeth and/or periodontium and nearby soft tissues such as lips, tongue etc.,
Dental injuries:
Enamel fracture --
Enamel-dentine fracture -- uncomplicated crown fracture.
Enamel-dentine fracture involving pulp exposure -- complicated crown fracture.
Root fracture of tooth --
Periodontal injuries:
Subluxation -- tooth knocked loose.
Lateral luxation -- lateral displacement of tooth.
Extrusive luxation -- external displacement of tooth.
Intrusive luxation -- internal displacement of tooth.
Avulsion -- tooth knocked out.
Injuries to supporting bone:
Injury involves the alveolar bone and may extend beyond the alveolus.

Risk factors for dental trauma:
1) Age - especially young children , mostly 2-3 years of age.
2) Sports, especially contact sports such as football, hockey, basketball, cricket.
3) Military training.
4) Class II malocclusion with increased overjet and class II skeletal relationship with incompetent lips.

Prevention:
Prevention is nearly impossible to stop accidents from happening, especially in children who are quite active.
Regular use of a gum shield during sports and other high risk activities, is the most effective prevention for dental trauma.
